Okay, for our final Into the Wild Blog Post, I want you to choose one of the below quotes and write a short response on it using the COMMENT link. I hope you've enjoyed this book as much as I have enjoyed reading it with you: you have, right? Your posts make it sound like it. It makes it hard to think that in 3 weeks from now we'll be reading Huck Finn rather than this book. I definitely think we'll have to work through that with some efficiency to get into more texts like Into the Wild.
Simply choose one of the below quotes and write about 5-7 sentences about it. What do you like about that combination of words? Do you apply that to your life? Will you? Just focus on YOU!
Due Friday, December 21st. Worth 10.
1-“(...)how important it is in life not necessarily to be strong, but to feel strong, to measure yourself at least once, to find yourself at least once in the most ancient of human conditions, facing the blind, deaf stone alone with nothing to help you but your hands and your own head.”
2-“The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.”
3-“It is important in life not to be strong, but to feel strong, to measure yourself at least once. If you want something in life, reach out and grab it.”
4-“The very basic core of a man's living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.”
5-“I've decided I'm going to live this life for some time to come. The freedom and simple beauty is just too good to pass up.”
6-“Happiness only real when shared.”

Quote 3-
ReplyDeleteI believe it's very important not to be physically strong but to be mentally strong. It's not bad to be weak, but in my opinion if your mentally strong you'll go farther in life. Life's not always going to be easy and at one point or another your going to have to face something difficult. Being mentally stronger witll help you deal with things better and get on with life. If you want something in life you need to go out and get it, being mentally strong will help you with determination and getting whatever you want In life!
Quote2-
ReplyDeleteI believe that by experiencing new things you can encounter new levels of happiness in things you never knew existed. So I do agree that changing where or how you live can lead to a great style of life. I dont nessecarily apply this quote to my every day life now, but in the future I hope to someday spend a period of time on the road. I'm not sure how long I would do it but I think that living out on the road and having these new experiances would be cool. I look forward to having days where I may think I'm lost but actually I'm just discovering something new that could change my life.
Quote 2-
ReplyDeleteI believe that happiness can be led from new experiences. If you are doing the same thing over and over again for you whole life, you aren't really getting anywhere or learning anything. By doing new things you learn more about yourself and what makes you happy. Also by changing your daily routine, it gives you something to look forward to. Looking forward to something generally brings out happiness in people and I think thats really important. This is a good quote to live by because it lets you know that change can always be a good thing.
Quote 3-
ReplyDeleteI believe it is ver important to be strong. Most people have day to day struggles And issues they need to stay strong about. A strong person can go much father in life then a weak person. I also think it takes time to build up strength. Sometimes earning strength requires you to make mistakes so you can learn from them. Being strong also takes a lot of confidence which help you in the future.

Deletequote 3-
ReplyDeleteIn life you need to be strong. I feel if you let yourself become vulnerable to other people that put you in bad moods is just not the right way. This is mentally strong but to be physical strong is a little bit less important. You can have the best body ever but if you have a mentally unstable mind that wont matter. In my opinion i feel mentally strong is more important.
I think that if you are physically strong it's obviously an advantage to have. To "feel strong" (mentally) is the better one to have, in my opinion. In my life relying on being physically strong will not allow me to achieve want I would want in life. So yes, I do apply quote 3 in my life. This quote is probably one of the few quotes i think has a big impact my life because my goals are such where if I didn't apply this to my life then I most likely won't complete my goals.
ReplyDeleteQuote 5
ReplyDeleteThis quote shows the simplicity and the beauty I tend to forget about. It is easy to forget what I have around me because there is so much going on. I'm not sure about living in the wilderness with almost nothing, but I want to be able to be aware of this and experience the "simple beauty". I sometimes overlook the simple things but when I notice them, I start to really appreciate them. I want to appreciate this instead of looking for something abstract and meaningless that will ultimately leave me empty. Everything I want is in front of me, I just have to look.
Quote 6-
ReplyDeleteI think this quote shows that if your happy, you can't express is if you don't share it with other people. It has an effect if you share it and the other people can feel happy too then.
Quote 5 really stuck out to me. “I've decided I'm going to live this life for some time to come. The freedom and simple beauty is just too good to pass up.” I feel like this was the theme throughout this entire book and it's actually a really beautiful quote. I know that if I had the chance to live a different way, a way that I really enjoy and would want to live, I would experience it for a while, just like how Chris did. Gaining total freedom and seeing beautiful sights anywhere I go would be great for me. Even in Schaumburg, I can experience the beauty that is around me and just enjoy the life I have right now.
ReplyDeleteQuote 3 is the one that stuck out to me most. If you feel weak you are setting yourself up not to do good because you don't feel like you are prepared enough for something. I believe that if you go in feeling strong you will have an easier time trying to get through all the crazyness that life throws at you. For the secong part of the quote "if you want something in life, reach out and grab it," I think that is easier said then done but I like to live by that. If you have a dream or something you really want don't wait for it to come go after it and get it youself.

ReplyDelete3-“It is important in life not to be strong, but to feel strong, to measure yourself at least once. If you want something in life, reach out and grab it.”
I liked this one out of all of them because this one really tells you that you need to learn and teach yourself how to go for your goals and dreams. Chris's dream was to pretty much go off and be independent and find himself and find different experiences. I feel as if he wanted a change in his life and he wanted to do something drastic to find that change. The first part of this quote i think means that you dont want to be that overly powered guy thats controlling everything and is very strong headed about every little thing even if you dont know what youre talking about and that you should FEEL strong and have that mind set that you are you and that only you have the capability to live your life however you want to live it.
Quote 2 really stood out to me. New experiences provide more opportunities for accomplishing things and learning more about myself. I believe that change is generally always beneficial in my life. As a high school student, I am a creature of habit, so all days seem very similar to me. I believe it is a lot more difficult to be joyful living such a monotonous and repetitive lifestyle as opposed to being able to go out and experience different things each and every day.I believe this quote will really apply to me in the future because there are many different things I want to do and see that will prevent my days from being so similar. The quote states that joy comes from waking up to a "new and different sun everyday", and I completely agree with the statement.
ReplyDelete6.
ReplyDeleteThis quote stands out for me because what i have been trying to do in my life is to make everyone happy. It's a very hard task, and a lot of the times, i fail miserably. Nevertheless, whoever i try to cheer up thanks me for trying which gives me somewhat a feel of accomplishment. I believe that everyone should at least feel a sense of warmth and happiness somewhere in there lives. whether it's everyday, or just even fifteen minutes. Those fifteen minutes can easily change a person to make them try and look to the brighter side of life, which i believe would make a better world around us. However, too much happiness can get corrupted into feelings of greed and lust, and this is why i believe those are the reasons that would make me fail in a sense. It's like something's telling me just to stop trying to get them happy because it'll get corrupted, as harsh as that sounds. Everyone diserves even the slight chance of happiness. it's what makes the world go 'round, and what keeps people up and animated.
Quote 2- I just really enjoy what is being said. I feel like I have been doing that all my life. I think this past summer I did so many random things. Like one day I was with my friend, and we somehow made it down to Chicago on the train for free. We walked around for like an hour and found a huge block party in this not so nice part of the city. Which was amazing until the police broke it up,for some reason. And you just meet tones of different people. For some reason meeting new people and going on adventures makes me happy.
ReplyDeleteI chose quote 2 because i really liked how i looked at the meaning of it. I agree with what he said because encountering the same things, and doing the same things in life, get boring. This quote is saying that when you experience joy, it comes from those things you arent familiar with and don't know what happiness it could bring. Having each day be unpredictatble and gaining experience in all you do, is a great way to live your life. This quote is saying to do things you might not be used to because thats a process of learning. Seeing new things can bring a new perspective to your life and endless changes in your life.
ReplyDeleteQuote 5-This quote reminds me how fragile life can be and how you must enjoy every secound of life that we have on earth because you never know when its your time to go. It also shows how we take our freedom to live life the way we please and the freedom to make our own decisions for granted and we should definitely appreciate those little things in life.
ReplyDeleteQuote 6- "Happiness only real when shared.”
ReplyDeleteWhile reading this book, this quote made a significant impact and change in my life. Now, I am going to try my best to share my happiness and love for things with others. I feel like this is the best method in being permanently happy for the rest of your life. I can't explain in words how happy I am to have discovered this why reading this book. Best reflection ever, as you saw in my previous post. Thanks for sharing this book with us Tesch!
Quote 3- All he wants to tell us is to be emotionally strong and eventually you will find the power to do anything. It is all about being mentally healthy and follow your goal no matter what it costs to reach it.He says to measure yourself at least once and I think he means that you should try something different from what you have done and see what are you capable of doing and how you react in different situations. Go outside, find yourself and figure out why do you exist but always with a good confidence for yourself.
ReplyDelete6-“Happiness only real when shared.”
ReplyDeleteI agree with that one because you can oly be happy with your loved ones even if you were rich it wouldn't be fun if you don't have someone to share it with
Quote 3 - The part of this quote that really gets me is the "if you want something if life, reach out and grab it." This really connects to me because I really want to be in a band when I get older. Release albums, tour the world that kind of stuff. And throughout my whole journey of trying to put together a band to do this with (about 5 years now) I have had always had people, and friends, tell me I'm gunna fail and I will never do it. I usually brush this off with a proud statement that I will do it, and that's what I continue to do, but I think it's really cool that Chris is, in a way, is telling ME that I can achieve my goal. If I work hard enough and want it bad enough, it can be mine. And that's what I really like about this quote. It's reinforcing the old "follow your dreams". Yea it sounds cheesy, but that's what I'm all about. And for everyone in my 6th hour class, I'll see you on the main stage at Warped Tour.
ReplyDeleteQuote 6-
ReplyDeleteChris hits the nail right on the head. I may find happiness in doing something that i love, but i feel i would never find true happiness until i was able to share that something with another person and possibly broaden their horizons. If i were only to practice my instruments by myself, alone, and only perform them for myself, alone, would i really have any motivation to keep working so hard to perfect my skills? I don't think i would; even though i love music, i'm a person who always needs to find value in something, and practicing for myself only to have nobody to share the finished product with would drive me nuts. That's not to say that i'd give up music in its entirety, but rather i'd give up performing aimlessly for myself. If a tree falls in a forest with nobody around to hear it, does it still make a noise? Technically, yes, but to connect it to what i was talking about- if i were to practice and practice for no driving reason except my own and perform for myself, would it really be music, or would it just be a collaboration of notes and rhythms put together through an instrument?
I like quote #6 because I feel something similar to it in my own life. Happiness is most enjoyable to me when it's shared with others. I try to do my best most days to improve the lives of people around me who deserve it. I'm always happiest when I make others laugh. This is why I believe that people are most important to me in my life.
ReplyDelete2. I like how it talks about new experiences. Because experiencing new things is one of the most fun things you can do! Like when I go new places In the world I love trying new foods!
ReplyDelete3. i think that being mentally tough is much more important than being physically strong. this quote shows that as long as you think you can do it, and feel strong enough to do it, you can.
ReplyDeleteQuote 2-
ReplyDeleteThis quote took the words right out of my mouth. I admire Chris for his journey with his new life. Simply using the earth as your home and just living with no boundaries or destination is ideal, but we're stuck in this lifestyle where we must see the same things everyday and live by a schedule. I'm happy for Chris because he's one of the few people in this world that are truely free.
Quote 3.
ReplyDeleteThis quote really spoke to me because people hate taking chances. I have to organize everything so I feel reassured that everything will go perfectly. Sometimes I miss my chance to do something great because I over think. This quote tells us to take that chance and not be scared to grab what you want.
Quote 3
ReplyDeleteThere's a reason so many people chose this quote because I believe in the shortest number of words it sums up Chris' motives and his personality. Chris realized he needed to make a change in his life and for him this was going on an adventure. This quote is also very inspiring to myself and I'm sure lots of other young people because it challenges us to do what we want with our lives and if we want something to go after it. Great book, great message.
Quote 6
ReplyDeleteI like this quote because I really do believe that happiness is real when shared. I volunteer at the hospital and while I volunteer they tell you to always smile and be social with the people that walk in and even when as they walk out of the building. There are so many happy volunteers and employees that it really does bring up your mood too. Especially when it comes to strangers, you never know what that person is going through and a simple compliment or acknowledgement goes a long way. Everyone deserves to feel happy and should feel that their presence is important.
